My Story…

Built on Tradition. Refined with Purpose.

I’m Olga Koran, founder of Reel Refuge — where every cast is a new beginning.

I grew up immersed in the rivers and streams of the Pacific Northwest, where my passion for fly fishing began the day my father (Bill Koran) built my first fly rod. That moment sparked a lifelong pursuit of the art, tradition, and quiet challenge the sport offers. For me, fly fishing is more than just the pursuit of a catch—it is a return to rhythm. In still waters and hidden currents, we slow down, listen intently, and reconnect with something timeless and pure. Rooted in the early lessons my father passed down—patience, precision, and reverence for water—my craft took shape long before I knew it would become my life’s path. Along the way, mentors stepped into the current and helped carry that trajectory forward, including Al Buhr, Dwight Klemin, Whitney Gould, Kerry Burkheimer, Rick Williams, and Poppy of Red Shed Fly Shop, among many others whose generosity deepened my understanding of what casting can truly be. My journey has carried me from single-hand trout waters to the sweeping poetry of two-hand spey casting, where steelhead became my enduring muse. I’ve competed from local events to the world stage, earning a third-place finish at the Jimmy Green International Spey-O-Rama at the Golden Gate Angling & Casting Club—an experience that sharpened my perspective and deepened my hunger to grow.

Today, as a Fly Fishers International Certified Casting Instructor, I work with anglers at every stage of their journey, delivering instruction rooted in technical clarity, intention, and respect for the waters we fish. But at the core of this work is something deeper than casting—it’s people. I saw a need not only for instruction, but for meaningful connection: teaching that is intentional, personal, and deeply human.

I offer private and group fly-casting instruction for beginners, intermediate, and advanced anglers—and no matter the level, Reel Refuge is guided by these principles:

Guide rather than dictate, meeting each angler where they are
Raise curiosity, because understanding why matters as much as knowing how
Anchor growth in strong fundamentals, practiced on the water and at home
Confidently equip anglers with tools that support long-term progress
Empower independence, trust, and inspire a continuing passion for the craft

Reel Refuge was born from a simple truth: fly fishing should feel welcoming, not intimidating. So many beginners—young and old—hesitate, overwhelmed by gear, technique, and tradition. I created Reel Refuge to guide, to listen, and to create a space where anyone can feel confident, capable, and rooted in the water—free to discover the rhythm, connection, and joy that makes fly fishing timeless. I’m also proud to give back through volunteer work with organizations such as The Mayfly Project, Casting for Recovery, Idaho2Fly, and Project Healing Waters: Sisters on the Rise—using fly fishing as a way to connect, support, and uplift others.

What began as a passion has grown into something deeper—a calling shaped by water, community, and intention. I’m grateful for the path that’s led me here, and even more inspired by the current still unfolding.

What sets Reel Refuge apart isn’t just instruction—it’s the heart behind it. Every lesson is rooted in listening, guided with purpose, and created to foster confidence, connection, and a lasting love for the art of fly fishing.
